No matter what kind of water ionizer or water filter system you have or are planning to buy you might find you benefit from reading [and watching demos] about alternate ways to install the system. Even if you already own a water ionizer and it’s nicely, already hooked to your sink faucet, you may eventually want to re-arrange the installation and get your water directly from the cold water line under your sink. For this, you will need to install what’s called a “Tee”. It’s called a Tee, because the piece of hardware is shaped a bit like the letter, T. Here’s a simple demo and explanation of how to do that.
Installing a Tee
Why install a tee? The reason I have installed a tee for my water ionizer was to eliminate the necessity to have hoses attached to my faucet. I really love it that way. The 1/4 inch hose hooks in under my sink; goes through a couple of filters and then comes out right where I want it, behind my water ionizer.
Here’s a quick video showing the full procedure, followed by an abbreviated transcript of the video.
Abbreviated Transcript of “Installing a Tee” video:
This is a simplistic explanation about how a tee gets installed. You have shut-offs on each water line under your sink both for hot water and cold water.
If you’re installing a water ionizer or water filter system and you want that filter system to be fed directly from your cold water and you don’t want to hook up to your faucet – a lot of people do this and a lot of people do this by themselves; they change faucets out by themselves; this type of thing. So if you’re handy enough you should be able to do it. Otherwise just get a handyman, because you do not want to develop a leak.
Normally with a shut-off hooked to a faucet feed line there’s no need for plumber’s tape or anything too tricky. The reason is, you can see there is an O-ring in there. When you have an O-ring, that will keep it from leaking.
Then you’re going to need to install your tee. It’s called a tee, because it kind of looks like the letter “T”. This has a nice O-ring in there too, so you don’t need plumber’s tape. Just tighten it in enough; you will need pliers for this.
In this case we will need an adapter to help fit the tee to the shut-off. This particular tee came with the adapter. Once the extension or adapter is in there, then you will be able to screw it right onto the faucet feed line.
If your tee doesn’t come with an adapter and you need one, the hardware store will have these things. Just bring your pieces into the hardware store and show them what you want.
Tightening it the right amount is what’s going to keep it from leaking.
Once you have the tee installed onto your shut-off, you will be able to supply water to your water ionizer, water filters or whatever you want to supply water to. The rest of the water ionizer installation will be easy. Once you’ve installed the Tee, check for leaks for the next couple of days. Water damage can be enormous, cost-wise.
Another thing to keep in mind with your tee, is that it has a shut-off. The shut-off position can be in the all-the-way open position [parallel with the water line]; fully-closed position [horizontal with the water line] or partially open position, which I like. It’s kind of a nice feature to be able to regulate your water flow. Flowing the water through filters a little bit more slowly is going to filter the water better. So, I usually will keep the shut-off in the partially open position for that reason.
To install the hose, you push it into a hole that’s called a Quick Connect. Quick-connects are also called John Guest Fittings. Don’t be satisfied with one push. I always give it another push. It has to be seated properly or it might leak. But once these quick connects are installed properly they won’t leak.
To remove the quick connect you just will pinch down on the ring and then pull out. It’s probably easier said than done with these quick connects, because they’re not always going to cooperate with you. There are tools you can get that will push the ring in with one hand rather than two thumbs and some people find that easier.

Because so many water ionizer customers have a hard time with understanding how a quick-connect fitting works, I’ve done a little video to show it to you. Here are the steps described in the video.
