Q: Why are alkaline water machines [water ionizers] so expensive? A: First of all, if you compare alkaline water machines to medical equipment, they're not expensive at all. But I'll explain how the expense of an alkaline water machine breaks down. The majority of the water ionizer cost is in the plates. Platinum is right now selling for over $1500.00 per ounce! Each plate in the water ionizer's water cell (which is the heart of the water ionizer) is coated with this expensive platinum. Water ionizers have between five and seven of these plates. The second greatest cost is in the research, development and production of the alkaline water machine. These are very scientifically developed and intricate machines and the researchers don't typically receive grant money for the construction of alkaline water machines either. Finally, these water ionizers will last a very long time [20 - 30 years or so] and all that time [provided that they are kept clean and free of scale build-up] they will give you the continued health benefits of ionized water. When you break down the expense of an alkaline water machine into the number of years of use, the cost is simply minimal [not expensive at all].

Q: Why do water ionizers [alkaline water machines] need platinum coating the electrodes? A: The reason that alkaline water machines must use platinum is: Platinum [along with titanium] is a very hard & dense metal and will not break down and leach into your alkaline ionized water... even over time. So the electrodes will virtually last forever, and Platinum catalyzes [speeds up] the electrolysis process allowing water to ionize instantly as the water passes through the alkaline water machine's electrolysis chamber. Q: How could you be sure your water supply is not too hard or just the opposite does not have enough minerals ...and what can you do about it? A: You can call your local water company [see your water bill] and ask them to send you a report, or you could email us and we'll be happy to find your report and analyze your water for you. If you live in an area where your water is extremely soft [below 80 TDS (total dissolved solids)] or if you need to use reverse osmosis on your water (due to contamination or just for the best filtration) you’ll need a remineralizer, which is a prefilter that adds enough minerals into your water to ionize it properly [these are all organic minerals by the way]. Water that has little or no minerals has no pathway for the electrolysis or "ionization" to occur. Some water ionizers come with a built-in mineral port, so this is something to look for if your water is only slightly low in minerals. A: I don’t think enough testing has been done on alkaline water machines to be able to answer that question with 100% confidence. You’re invited to stop-by my “Water Ionizer Comparison Chart” page. I’ve placed objective alkaline water machine test results [and videos] on the page and I’ve analyzed the tests and ranked the ionizers according to what I think is Good, Better and Best, compared to all of the other alkaline water machines. Q: In a nutshell, what is an "alkaline water machine or ionizer"? A: First of all an alkaline water machine or ionizer filters and reduces the size of your water molecule clusters so that your water is more absorbable into your cells. It breaks your tap water into two types: alkaline water and acidic water. By passing a small amount of electricity through platinum coated titanium electrodes about 70% of the clusters become negative ORP (anti-oxidant) alkaline water molecules and the other 30% positive ORP acid water molecules. Many scientists now believe the antioxidant properties of ionized water (ORP) are even more important than the alkalinity of the water for health and longevity.

Q: Why would I want to drink alkaline ionized water rather than regular tap, filtered tap or bottled water? A: There are basically five reasons why you should drink alkaline ionized water rather than regular or bottled water:1. Elimination of acid wastes from your body, 2. Great filtration of your water.3. Ionization splits the water into smaller clusters of 5-8 molecules and so making it easier to get the water into your cells.4. Ionization reduces the ORP, so that your water becomes an antioxidant, 5. It costs less than $1.00 or even less than 50¢ per day [depending on the ionizer you buy] to create all the alkaline ionized water you and your family can drink.

Q: Are there any cautions about drinking ionized alkaline water? A: You should start slowly. Set the controls to the lowest alkaline level. Assuming the water agrees with you, increase the amount you drink and the level of ionization intensity. High levels of alkalinity -- up to 9.5-10.0 -- are best for drinking water; the highest levels can be used for cooking. Use the "Purified Water" setting for taking any medications that your doctor advises not to be taken with alkaline water. Do not drink the acid water that comes out of the lower spout.

Q: What is pH, and how do I test my body's pH? A: PH stands for "potential hydrogen". It basically means how acid, alkaline or neutral something is. On a scale of 1 - 14, 1 - 6.9 would be ranges of acidity (with 1 being the most acid) and 7.1 - 14 would be ranges of alkalinity (with 14 being the most alkaline), and 7 would be neutral. In a healthy state, our saliva should be slightly alkaline (a little above 7.3). However, a large majority of North Americans and Europeans are in an acid condition, and this can be demonstrated. If you're curious as to whether you're acidic, ask for our free pH saliva test. In this simple test, special pH papers are used to measure the acidity /alkalinity of saliva under carefully controlled conditions. This can give you a relative, general picture.

Q: What kind of source water can I use to produce alkaline water? A: Regular tap water is best. Distilled water or water filtered by reverse osmosis does not have any minerals, therefore it cannot be ionized unless you also hook in a remineralizer into your input line. Water ionizers can be used with most well water. The two most common problems found in well water are hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg, sulfur smell) and high iron or calcium content. Both of these conditions can be remedied with the proper pre-filter. The mineral content of your source water directly affects the strength of ionized water you can produce. The more minerals, the stronger the ionization: higher alkalinity and higher antioxidant potential. If you have a well it is suggested that you do a comprehensive well water test to ensure you are getting the proper pre-filtration if needed. A: No. Alkaline Water Machines / Water Ionizers have been in use worldwide for more than 40 years for home and industrial applications. In Korea, alkaline water machines have been approved by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Millions are already in use in Japan in homes and hospitals. In the USA thousands of enlightened individuals have been using alkaline water ionizers for many years, but the word is really just beginning to spread.

Q: Will alkaline ionized water interfere with digestion? A: NO. From my many years of actual experience, I can safely say that. For me it never has. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know hundreds of people who have been drinking ionized water for years, and I’ve honestly never heard of ionized water interfering with anyone’s digestion. For myself, my family, and my extended family, not only has ionized water not interfered with digestion, lots of drinking of alkaline ionized water has improved our digestion along with all of our other body functions overall. I used to get heartburn and acid reflux regularly, and so did my husband. Since we started drinking ionized water [about 19 years ago] we have had few [or no] instances of heartburn or any other digestive disorders. I have to say, though, that we, personally, never have drunk alkaline ionized water with meals. We drink lots before and after mealtimes…but not specifically with meals. We really have no reason for this, it’s just the way we eat [our preferences]. Some of the people we know do drink ionized water with their meals, such as my father and my mother-in-law, and none have reported that it interfered with their digestion in any way. Actually, water is one of the only substances we consume that doesn’t stimulate digestion. The reason is there are no calories in water whatsoever. There are no proteins, carbs or fats to stimulate any of the enzymes or gastric juices related to digestion. Normally, when you are not in “eating mode”, your stomach has only a tiny amount of HCL [hydrochloric acid] in it [maybe a teaspoon's worth or less]…that’s all. If the stomach thinks food is on its way [because of smell or taste-signals sent to it], then it has the ability to deliver the gastric juices it needs on-demand. Water, on the other hand, does not have any smell or taste to stimulate gastric juices to be produced. Once in the stomach, there is nothing in water [no carbs, proteins, or fats] to trigger digestion, so the water is allowed to pass right on through to the intestines without any digestion whatsoever. Ionized water gets into your bloodstream fast! All kinds of water, especially alkaline ionized water since it’s micro-clustered, will get into your bloodstream within minutes [rather than hours] of consumption, because it does not trigger digestion at all. This is unlike anything else you consume.

Q: Which container is best and what's the best way to store ionized water? A: A glass container with a tight screw-on lid, that gets a good seal is best. It is also best to overfill the bottle or jar then screw the lid on in such a way as to get either no air-bubble inside or the smallest air-bubble you can get. The air-bubble size makes a huge difference in how well the negative ORP [antioxidant potential] lasts [it can range from one hour to days], depending on the size of the air-bubble inside your container. The type of lid also can make a huge difference. The difference between glass, plastic and stainless steel is fairly negligible compared to the air-bubble and type of lid in the ability to store the pH and ORP for long periods.

Does it change the pH or ORP of ionized water to mix it with flavor-aids or alcohol? Yes it does. I've tried Kool-Aid, Crystle Lite and other drink mixes, and without fail these kind of chemically-created drink mixes neutralize the benefits [of pH and ORP] of ionized water. They'll actually make it acidic. I've tried mixing ionized water with fresh-squeezed lemon juice, and it turned the ionized water acidic. [However the end result of digesting lemon is an alkaline ash, so lemon juice is okay.] When mixed with tea [just dunking the tea bag into the iionized water [unheated] the result is very little change in pH or ORP. When heating it too, the result is losing all the ORP and the heated tea is also acidic. When I've added sugar or Stevia to ionized water, the result is very little change in pH or ORP. With Splenda there is a bit of a reduction of ORP and a neutralization of the pH. When adding a generic sweetner [in a yellow packet like Splenda] it turned the water acidic and lost much of the ORP. When adding alcohol [Scotch] to the ionized water, very little change was made in the pH or ORP.
