I've tested most of the water ionizers myself, and so have hands-on knowledge of them. If you feel confused while reading &/or watching this information, please don't hesitate to call me, 1-888-420-1420 [Cathie]; I'll be happy to answer your questions.
When comparing water ionizers it's important to only look at the water ionizers tested at the same location and time. Also, even though a water ionizer is best in one set of tests, you should try to see several tests of that water ionizer before making a judgment.
The most important factor to look at [in my opinion] is the healthiness of the ionized drinking water that each water ionizer is able to produce.

*pH means potential Hydrogen and is measured by a logarithmic [each unit is a multiple of 10 of the preceding unit] scale from 1 to 14. When a substance is below 7 on the scale it is said to be acidic. When it's above 7 it's said to be alkaline. The blood is around 7.35 and must stay in a very narrow range of slight alkalinity in order to sustain life.
*ORP means Oxygen Reduction Potential. It basically stands for the proportionate amount of negatively charged Hydrogen ions [H-] existing in a substance. The easiest way to look at is ...it's the anti-oxidant effect that that substance is capable of giving your body when you drink it.
*rH is “relative Hydrogen”. This test calculation shows the actual health benefits of the water tested. Many now believe that this is the most important factor contributing to good health.
The rH of a solution is based on a formula applied to the pH and ORP to arrive at the relation between the level of ORP to the level of pH. It is the best measure of the healthiness of that ionized water.
RH is the best measure of the healthiness of that ionized water. I always consider the rH to be the most important measure to look at in any water ionizer comparison test.
Here’s an example to help you see why the rH formula is necessary: if you have two water ionizers both producing water at a pH of 9.5, and one has an ORP of -300 while the other has an ORP of -400, then it would be easy to see that the one with -400 is producing water at a healthier overall quality. However, most people testing water ionizers don’t get the exact same pH readings for all the water ionizers tested. So the rH formula is necessary to really see which water ionizer is producing the healthier water. The formula is a very simple one, and anyone comparing water ionizers should look at the rH of the water at the drinking water levels if they are trying to figure out which water ionizer is best. Because ORP is a very tricky measure to get and ORP meters can vary from test to test [depending on how well or frequently they're cleaned, source water and other factors] it’s important to only compare the ORP or rH of water ionizers tested in one setting by the same tester. RH is measured on a scale of 0 to 42, with 0 being the healthiest and 42 the unhealthiest. Tap water in St. Louis is usually around 30 - 35 rH. Any water under 28 rH is considered “reducing” and so is healthy for you.
“The relative hydrogen scale was first proposed by Clark in 1923 to the scientific community (mostly inorganic chemists) as a means of measuring the true reducing power of hydrogen present in an aqueous solution…”* It is mostly used in water treatment facilities, but I imagine that the water ionizer engineers use it to test their own water ionizer designs. Go to this website to see this article and get a more thorough and scientific explanation of rH: http://h-minus-ion.vpinf.com/rH-score-1.html
I stumbled upon this when I was debunking the Hydrogen Stick as a supposed solution to the health issues solved with a water ionizer. The Hydrogen Stick people were purporting that Dr. Hayashi believes Hydrogen [H-] has caused greater health benefits than alkalinity. They were saying that the Hydrogen left the ionized water through evaporation very quickly and so within an hour or there-abouts you'd be without the H- benefit if you used ionized water ...and they were claiming that the Hydrogen stick provided more Hydrogen and thus greater health benefits than ionized water. I wanted to test this, so in searching for a way to actually measure the Hydrogen in the water, I found that the way to find the Hydrogen [short of having a $10,000.00 meter] was to use the rH formula and scale to compare two solutions to each-other. The rH scale goes from 0 to 42 and the solution which has an rH closer to 0 is healthier than the other. I then was able to test the Hydrogen Stick water against ionized water. The results were that ionized water had a far better rH [relative Hydrogen] than the Hydrogen Stick, and even after a day of soaking a Hydrogen Stick and ionized water sitting for a day...the ionized water was far better. The Waterman ionizer pitcher [H2go] works on a similar basis as the Hydrogen Stick [except it also filters the water] and it gets a better rH than the Hydrogen Stick. But out of all of these a water ionizer is so much better -- there really is no contest.

Note: The Silver State Lab video has been removed because there were inaccuracies in which Life Ionizer was being tested. The Life 7500 was actually not tested by Silver State Labs. The video closeup was added later...in the editing of the video. Because the video showed the wrong ionizer...not the one that was used in the test, it is too inaccurate to keep on this page. I do link to to the *Certified Independent Lab Performance Testing*[SilverState pdf Report] though, which has all the actual bonified results from that batch of testing.
Are you considering buying the Enagic water ionizer? Does the high price [$3800.] mean that it's the best?
Does the high price of the Enagic mean it's the best water ionizer? Actually, it's not the best water ionizer. The saline port is awesome for getting the very high/low pH values, however this is coming at a large [double the price] expense. The internal cleaning system of the Enagic is only average [the Melody & Athena are far better]. The ability to ionize the water [producing a healthy, high ORP, drinking water] is also only average [the Athena, Life, Tyent, Chanson and KYK are better...the Melody is about the same]. I've had the opportunity to test the Enagic water ionizer myself [see blog] and because the price was so high [and their claims -- the Enagic dealers sounded so positive and sure that they were the best] I was expecting results far better than what I got. As a matter of fact the results were so AVERAGE that I just feel compelled to tell people the truth about the Enagic water ionizer. The truth is, it is an average water ionzer.
Is there anything wrong with an average water ionizer? Absolutely not! Water ionizers are awesome for your health, and you will save so much money in the long run by drinking fresh ionized water [not more than a day old] that it totally justifies the price-tag! I'm just glad that not every water ionizer company puts such a high price on their water ionizer!
How can you tell if a water ionizer is superior? The two most important ways to compare water ionizers are:
Compare the pH and ORP [antioxidant potential] that the water ionizers can produce Plate size and number of plates is not the best way to compare. It is the design of the water ionizer that ultimately one should look at. As a matter of fact plate size can hurt a water ionizer's performance if the design isn't right. The ionizer with the best overall design will:
Do better in comparison tests. The only way to do this is through side-by-side comparisons,
Clean itself [internally] very well...so your pH and ORP will always stay high [not dwindle down over time.] way to tell how superior a water ionizer is.
Larger plates require more electricity to push through the plates. This has the potential to do harm and should be researched more. It can not only reduce the water ionizer's ability to ionize efficiently, but also too much electricity going through the plates for too many years can wear down the plates prematurely and also cause the water ionizer to overheat or burn out. Therefore, how many years has the water ionizer been around? Is it tried-and-true? What's the warranty like? These are definitely things to consider.
Compare the water ionizers' internal cleaning systems. Why do I say you should compare the water ionizers' cleaning systems? A good cleaning system is the only way your water will be able to continue to produce the best ionized water in years to come. It's very important to keepthe electrodes clean[not just clean them periodically]. The electrodes are the "heart" of the water ionizer. If the electrodes can be kept squeaky clean, then your water ionizer will continue to be able to produce the best, high pH, low ORP [high antioxidant], water as if it was brand new out of the box! If the water ionizer isn't kept internally cleaned well enough, then the electrodes will develop a calcium film [or scale build up] on them. This will reduce the water ionizer's capacity to ionize water over the months and years. Ideally, one should set up all the water ionizers in one location, and use them equally, and test them periodically to then see which water ionizer continues to be the best -- over time. But, short of that, we can predict this pretty well by looking at the cleaning systems to see which are the best.* Here's a video that helps explain the Melody & Athena's internal cleaning systems and why they're superior.
I'm just going to boldly state that the Tyent, Athena, KYK, Chanson, and Life Water Ionizers all beat the Enagic Water Ionizer [and Melody comes out real close or equal].
Here's why...
·Test Results show the Melody and Enagic are neck-& neck and the Tyent, KYK, Life, Athena and Chanson are beating the Enagic!
· Even if you're Focusing only on Plate Size: Tyent beats Enagic, and Life & KYK are equal!
·Internal Continuous Plate Cleaning is 3x better in the Melody and Athena!
·PRICE & Affordability & is better in all!
·Warranty: The Life and Tyent are beating the Enagic with their 10-year warranties and the Jupiter water ionizers are now beating with their lifetime warrantees!
·Honesty [Honest Water Ionizer Companies don't make claims about other water ionizers without showing proof to back up their claims.]
·Convenience: You have no "wait time" with the Melody & Athena water ionizers like you do with the Enagic [while it self-cleans].
·More advanced, computerized electroplating methods are used on the Chanson, Melody and Athena water ionizers…providing for more efficient electrolysis.
·The Melody, Athena, Life, Chanson, Tyent, & KYK all have more advanced, better filters! Also, better filter counter [more accurately tells you when it's time to change your filter] and better filter replacement costs!
·The coral calcium port in the Melody, Chanson and Athena are an added bonus [to boost drinking water ionization in soft water areas] that the Enagic doesn't have!
*** And Don't Forget...Company User-Friendliness! [60-Day Satisfaction Guarantee & Free Shipping] ...is better in all!
Please Note: All of my water ionizers above have UL certification except Tyent and Chanson (which have pending UL certifications).
All of my water ionizers have ISO certification. Jupiter, Tyent and Enagic have both, and Chanson, Life and KYK have ISO 9001.
