Hydrogen Water and Ionized Water: Proven to Support Healing and Wellness
Hydrogen-rich water and ionized water are being studied for their potential to support cellular balance. The above diagram illustrates the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cellular protective mechanisms and other health benefits of H2 (Molecular Hydrogen).
On this Hydrogen Water & Ionized Water Medical Research page, you can explore hundreds of scientific studies related to molecular hydrogen, also known as H2, and its possible role in a wide range of chronic health conditions.
There is a growing body of research examining the therapeutic potential of molecular hydrogen. It can be delivered either by dissolving it into water to create hydrogen-rich water, or by inhalation as hydrogen gas.
When you drink water from a water ionizer, you are not just hydrating. You are also introducing dissolved molecular hydrogen into your body. Molecular hydrogen is being studied for its potential role as a selective antioxidant, helping to neutralize certain harmful free radicals.
Because hydrogen is extremely small, it may diffuse rapidly through the body and reach tissues throughout the system. Researchers are studying hydrogen-rich water for its possible role in helping reduce oxidative stress and support normal cellular function.
This area of research has attracted growing interest because molecular hydrogen appears to have a strong safety profile and unique physical properties. Ongoing studies continue to explore its possible relevance to inflammation, metabolic health, organ function, and overall wellness.
Because molecular hydrogen is so small, it may pass through cell membranes and even cross the blood-brain barrier, allowing it to reach areas that many other compounds cannot. Its neutral, non-toxic nature is one reason it continues to receive scientific attention.

How Do You Get Hydrogen Water?
There are two main ways to get hydrogen water:
My personal preference is for the water ionizer because the variety of high-pH water is a tool I use to help balance the pH of my body. However, I also frequently use a hydrogen water machine. I consider these machines as tools. Just as a carpenter uses the best tools to build a long-lasting strong house, I use these tools to build a long-lasting healthy body.
*Note: EHW is also referred to by scientists as electrolyzed hydrogen water, ionized water, electrically reduced water, electrochemically reduced water, electrolyzed reduced water, reduced water, or ERW.
Scientific Studies & Clinical Trials on Hydrogen and Ionized Water Benefits

Best Practices for Drinking Alkaline or Hydrogen-Rich Water
- Before meals: Sip small amounts of water 15–30 minutes before eating. Adding a few drops of apple cider vinegar can help prepare digestion.
- During meals: Drink moderately to aid swallowing and activate digestive enzymes. Alkaline water with a squeeze of lemon can enhance nutrient absorption, especially water-soluble vitamins (B and C) and minerals.
- After meals: Continue with small sips for up to 30 minutes after eating to support ongoing digestion.
- Between meals: Ideal for hydration, neutralizing metabolic acids, supporting bowel movements, and providing antioxidants if the water is rich in molecular hydrogen.
Water itself does not trigger digestion, as it has no calories. Hydrogen-rich water quickly delivers antioxidants and pH buffering benefits directly to your cells, maximizing its protective effects.
Avoid Possible Negative Effects During Meals:
Avoid drinking large amounts of water during meals, as it may temporarily dilute stomach acid, potentially slowing protein digestion.

Hydrogen-rich water and ionized water have been studied extensively for their potential role in supporting overall health and cellular balance.
A large and growing number of scientific studies have explored their effects across multiple areas, including skin health, inflammation, oxidative stress, aging, eye health, and general wellness. While it is not possible to include every study on this page, the research presented here represents a broad cross-section of the available scientific literature.
Interest in hydrogen and ionized water research increased significantly in Japan, where early clinical use and hospital-based observations helped bring attention to these technologies. During that time, a number of case reports and demonstrations were shared publicly, highlighting potential applications in areas such as skin conditions and overall health.
Historical Clinical Observations
One example comes from Akashi Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, where Dr. Shinkai reported outcomes in patients with atopic dermatitis using both alkaline and acidic ionized water.
Atopic dermatitis is a condition often associated with chronic inflammation and itching. Observational reports from that period suggested that some patients experienced noticeable improvements in symptoms when ionized water was incorporated into their care.
These early reports helped spark ongoing scientific interest and further research into the potential mechanisms of hydrogen-rich and ionized water, particularly in relation to inflammation, skin health, and immune response.
As with all research in this field, findings should be interpreted in the context of study design, and ongoing research continues to explore these effects in greater depth.

Summary of Research Findings on Hydrogen & Ionized Water

The research presented on this page highlights a growing body of scientific interest in molecular hydrogen (H₂) and hydrogen-rich (ionized) water as tools for supporting overall health and cellular balance.
Across human clinical trials, animal studies, and laboratory research, hydrogen has been consistently studied for its potential role in:
- Reducing oxidative stress and free radical damage
- Supporting cellular function and signaling pathways
- Modulating inflammation and immune responses
- Improving aspects of metabolic health, including glucose and lipid balance
- Supporting organ systems, including the heart, brain, liver, and kidneys
- Enhancing recovery, resilience, and overall wellness
One of the most unique aspects of molecular hydrogen is its ability to act as a selective antioxidant, meaning it may help neutralize harmful free radicals without interfering with beneficial biological processes.
Hydrogen can be delivered through hydrogen-rich water, ionized (electrolyzed) water, or hydrogen gas, and research continues to explore its potential applications across a wide range of health conditions.
While many findings are promising, it is important to recognize that research is ongoing. Studies include a combination of human clinical trials, animal models, and laboratory investigations, and results should be interpreted within that context.
Overall, the evidence suggests that hydrogen-rich water is a safe and increasingly studied approach to supporting hydration, cellular health, and long-term wellness.
